READ Strayer p. 479-482. Look up René Descartes and Francis Bacon. WRITE a post on the class blog comparing their approaches and positing a thesis about how their scientific methods might have upended religions doctrine and empowered people in Europe.
Francis Bacon emphasized experimental and observational science was the key to modern science. The religions in that time, such as Christianity, were trying to keep the majority of the population loyal to their religion by telling them to follow the Bible. The Bible says that God controls the Earth and it is the center of the Earth. With experiments and observations of the world, people are able to discover the actual reasons of why humans exist and the secrets of the universe. With people like Francis Bacon emphasizing their beliefs, it wills other people who feel the same way come out of the dark and speak up. They also would conduct their own experiments if they were capable and get other people in believing in science. Then the scientists will gain more power in Europe and will be able to show the common people in Europe what is actually true. They can also back up their claims with proof, unlike religions.
Rene Descartes emphasized the importance of math and logic in understanding the physical world. He also invented analytical geometry. With math and new ideas of logical science blooming, people in Europe get to understand the physical terrain and plains of their continent. Eventually, to a certain extent, they could make major physical discoveries about the world, such as that the Earth is round. Also, with people's understanding of the physical world, they would know where exactly to go to visit other countries to trade and learn of their cultures. The details of the routes to travel is crucial if they want their own state from Europe to receive the best quality goods and objects.
