Louise the 14th took over rule of France and Navare after the death of his prime minister Cardinal Jules Mazarin. As Louise came to rule the French nation had concurrently were undergoing bankruptcy. As the ruler he decided to enforce many changes of rule to help out the land. He decided to reduce the nations debt by enforcing a national debt on different items such as salt, custom duties, and a tax on land. Louise and his assistant who was a general of finances decided to help their trade system by encouraging inventors and manufactures to produce more tradable items. He also invented different manufactures such as ship builders and glass-makers. This effort allowed the French nation to decrease foreign imports and increase french exports allowing them to not only waste money but earn it at the same time.

  1. I could be mistaken but im pretty sure his name is Louis XIV not Louise XIV. Also, I'm not sure that his rule of absolute monarchy helped any aspects of French society because the French Revolution, which called to an end to Absolute Monarchies like Louis's, occured only a couple of years after his reign. He can almost be blamed for the french Revolution by installing a form of government that angered his own people.

  2. Will introduces an interesting and valid point about how the flaws of absolutism caused the French Revolution. However, Louis XIV had many accomplishments and did some great things for France, as Julian acknowledges. Louis XIV made France a more recognized dominant power in the world by engaging in several wars and uplifting France financially. Yes - Louis XIV did lose these wars and eventually placed France into severe debt after his reign, but he created positive long term effects for France, although at the time they may have seemed questionable. Now, France is an incredibly successful nation and Louis XIV is remembered as a great ruler who achieved significant goals for France. Absolutism makes Louis XIV seem boastful and ineffective, but pretty much all European nations at the time used Absolutism as well. Therefore, setting aside Louis XIV's absolutistic methods and considering the time period, Louis XIV helped France more than he weakened it.
