CHECK OUT this website and WATCH the video titled “The Decision to Drop the Atomic Bomb.” (Feel free to watch any others that look interesting to you as well, obviously!) In a short paragraph on the blog, EXPLAIN why you think NBC decided to air this piece in 1995. What does it tell us about the history and memory of WWII?

I believe that the reason for NBC airing this piece in 1995 was to remind people of the horrors of war. Also to show Americans what terrible results the atomic bomb created. Children in schools learning about World War II know of the bombs and violence, but some don’t realize the extent of the damage brought upon Japan from the atomic bomb. Thousands of Japanese on the home front were slaughtered in order for Japan to eventually surrender. I think the atomic bombs are more controversial than ever now because there is still damage done to people who weren’t even alive during World War II. Because of the radiation, the survivors of the atomic bombs carry the radiation in them and in their genes. Certain children in Japan now are suffering from their ancestor’s genes of cancer and other harmful diseases from the overexposure to radiation. Even though the war ended half a century ago, people are still being affected from the bombs that were dropped on Japan from America. America closed the war by killing thousands of people on the home front of Japan. The costs were high, but some people believe that it was necessary to win the war by those measures.
