Louis XIV lived from September 5, 1638 – September 1 1715) He was known as the Sun King and he was the King of France and Navarre. As the ruler he was able to continue his predecessors work of creating a centralized state governed from the capital. So he was trying to bring all political aspects of their empire to the capital so he could directly control it without having to relocate to different locations to stabilize different areas. He also created a supreme type of government which was called absolutism, He was the ideal example of kingship. The Cultural aspect of his reign was that he put work into cultural enhancement so he could brag it to the world. An example of the cultural change was the palace of Versailles. In 54 years of his 72 year reign French culture became one of the most entrancing things in the world.

I'm not sure if I entirely agree with some of the ideas and statements within this post. I think that when you say, "As the ruler he was able to continue his predecessors work of creating a centralized state governed from the capital," you imply that he continue to reign in the same style and with the same objectives of prior monarchs. If I am not mistaken this was not at all the case - he greatly changed government in that he announced he was the absolute ruler of France whereas other kings had given more power to others. He also did not continue to rule from the capital. If anything he was removed from it living in Versailles which remains to this day a 45 minute car ride from Paris (back then, this amount of time would be greatly increased). I do agree though that he remained fairly stationary as king, NOT traveling to address the concerns of his subjects throughout France.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of organization, I think that you could have been a little more clear. If you proofread it, this would have been improved. As it is, your meaning is slightly convoluted.
Nick I do agree with your statement about Louie trying to bring all of the government under one roof in the capitol, however I agree with Nicole for the reason that he was the Supreme leader of France. He was the one who made the most drastic changes for France and actually upheld his rule on his own. As well as starting a coalition with the Spanish to gain secure the thrown for his grandson.
ReplyDeleteNick I think that I agree with Nicole in her disagreement with some of your statements (if that makes sense). I dont think that he moved all aspects of government to the capital so that he didn't have to move around, I think he did that so that he could have the most power as possible. Other then that, I think that there are a lot of good ideas in the blog that you could have explained a little more, rather then just leaving them as one sentence. For example, it would have been more effective to explain what absolutism was instead of just saying that it was created.
ReplyDeleteI think that I agree with parts of your statements but I would like it if you go into more detail because some of it doesn't make much sense. Maybe you could just elaborate on points more so the reader could understand what you are trying to say better. Such as absolutism and what he did to accomplish that type of government.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Nicole in that I don't agree that Louis ruled with the same style that his predecessors did. Louis XIV did make a lot of changes (i.e: moving the capital, absolutism, removing Papal authority, and these are some major changes. You sort of contradict yourself when you say ruled like his predecessors and saying that he created a new form of government. I also think you should expand a little on the cultural aspect, maybe going into his patronage toward the arts or something. For the most part, you wrote clearly, and I thought it was pretty well organized.
