Descartes was a French Philosopher who resolved " to seek no other knowledge than that which I might find within myself, or perhaps in thee book of nature. In this statement he is saying that you need to do things yourself and that their is no external force having an impact in your life which at that time would have caused problems because in that area they were very religious and the churches probably wanted to get rid of him and his ideas. Also he emphasized mathematics which was a new idea hat also did not agree with the churches ideas because it also wasn't a religious thought and it didn't agree with what GOD would say is right.
Bacon was an English philosopher who proposed the idea of the Baconian method which was that that use procedures for isolating the form nature, or cause. Also you have to uncover things by using inductive or deductive reasoning. Which would be like doing experimentation, and exploration to find what you are looking for That idea would also conflict with the church because they probably believe that GOD assists you in experimentation so you cannot do it on your own.
