The maps on page 377 and 379 are diferent in many ways. the map on page 377 was drawn by a cartographer from germany just after colombus landed in the western hemisphere. the map was drawn to reflect Europe's awareness of the planet's global dimensions and location of the world's land masses. The map on page 279 shows the four prominent Islamic powers in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; the Mughal empire, the Safavid empire, the Ottoman empire and the Songhay empire.
A map drawn by a Chinese cartographer may focus on China's own provinces because the chinese beleived they were vasty superior to those around the world, and that they did not need to explore, that the goods would find their way to china. An ottoman cartographer may draw a map that is mainly focused on the middle east and places were converts to islam may be found, because that was one of the turk's main goals.
