What can influence a state
What started the Ming Dynasty’s success was the cultivation of it’s agricultural system. Geographically, a state needs to be on good ground in order for it to grow because farming was such and essential part of life. If people are well fed and have a surplus from farming, it promotes trade, so if the placement of the state isn’t good for farming or something else that could be cultivated and traded away, then it would not prosper nearly as much as one that is. Technology also greatly influences a state’s size and power. Better technology can either help a state conquer it’s neighbors and seize power, or it can help forge new connections with other states. Technology also promotes wealth and even more trade.

I agree that agriculture is important to a state's success, but you didn't back up this claim with any evidence. I don't think the textbook even attributes the Ming Dynasty's success to agriculture. It seems to think that their armada during the 1400s that controlled trade in Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean was the biggest key to their success.
