The Important Characteristics of a Powerful State

In order for a state to function well and expand its power it must have five key aspects. First, it has to have a society that has a common goal in mind; everyone in the state must be on the same page on topics such as religion and ethics. Second, the state must have a political system that keeps the public appeased so that their are no thoughts of mutiny or revolution. Third, there must be a steady income of money that is fairly distributed to the public. A powerful state must also have an economy that is based on trade so that it can bring back the best aspects of its trading partner's cultures back the home. Fourth, a powerful state must have strong culture that is shared by its citizens so that all of the State's citizens have a common ground. Fifth, a powerful state must be aware of its surroundings; it must have a standing militia or military/naval force of some sort to protect from attacks from hostile neighbors.

  1. I agree with what you are saying here. Trade is very important, proven by the success and longetivity of the ottoman empire, and also about a strong culture. However, I don't agree that a strong millitary is absolutely necessary. I think if you have allies that are powerful then it will go a longer way for you. Take Costa Rica for an example. They have no army and they are surrounded by Honduras and Nicaragua, two countries that are and absolute mess, and would attack Costa Rica. Yet, they remain one of the most peaceful countries because they are allies with the United States. If you are allies with a US, or a Britain, or a China, then you will have success.
