European and Islamic Map Comparison

The Waldseemuller Map of 1507 shows European knowledge through the detail of the European geography compared to Asia or the Americas. We also know this map reflects European interests because Europe and Eurasia are located in the center of the map. The exaggerated size and number of Pacific and SE Asian islands shows how the Euros were probably interested in trading and obtaining exotic things and spices. An obvious bias is that the famous European explorer Amerigo Vespucci is drawn at the top of the map.

A Chinese 16th century map would show Easter Asia more accurately. The Indian Ocean would also be drawn in detail because the fleet under Zheng He controlled trade there for around 100 years. Easter Asia might be the center of this map and the islands wouldn't be so prominent because the Chinese knew them better.

An Ottoman map might show the empire as being bigger than it actually was and would acknowledge its neighbor and practicer of Shiite Islam, the Safavid Empire. The map might be more oriented toward religion, especially Islam and Christianity and would also show the rest of the old Roman empire.
