The Taliban

My new refined current events research question is "How have the Taliban gotten so powerful in Afghanistan?"

This question is significant because they are one of the main problems that the Afghan and American governments face in Afghanistan. They are a large terrorist organization of Islamist extremists that have a looming presence in all of Afghanistan, and especially the south. Currently Afghan, American and NATO forces are fighting to clear out pockets of the Taliban. Afghanistan won't be able to be a functional, democratic and educated country with the Taliban's presence. The Taliban also suppresses women's rights and are extremely violent.

It is important to attempt to answer this question because we need to collect information about our enemy. If we know how they rose to power, then we can be aware if another organization attempts to do this and possibly how to bring the Taliban down. It's also just good to have an understanding of one of the world's most well known terrorist organizations and how they affect a country where our troops are fighting.

but the fighting is tough and is undermined by the corruption and instability in the Afghan government.
