Map Comparison: Europe vs. China

COMPARE the maps on pg. 377 and 379. How does the map on 377 reflect European knowledge, bias, and interests?

This map shows signs of North America and South America, which explains that this map was created after Columbus discovered the Americas. The Europeans' knowledge of the western atmosphere is expressed through this map, as well as their interest in Africa and the Indonesian islands. Africa is considerably larger in proportion to the rest of map, which shows that the Europeans show particular interest in African land. The Indonesian islands are also in great numbers: way more than actually exist. Since these islands were crucial to many European trading industries, they appear in great numbers.

THINK AND WRITE about what a Chinese map from the 16th century might look like. How about one drawn by Ottoman cartographers?

China, like many European nations, thought themselves to be superior to other cultures. In a map drawn by China, the nation of China would most likely be very large compared to the rest of the world, especially to Europe. The Indonesian islands would also be very detailed and fairly accurate, considering how close and connected China and the Indies are in terms of trading. The Americas may also appear on a 16th century Chinese map because China explored even before the Europeans and may have ventured over towards North/South America.

Ottoman Empire maps would probably pay close attention to the Islamic region of the world, especially its own domain. Surrounding empires, such as the Safavid Empire, Songhay Empire, and Mughal Empire, would perhaps be large in proportion to the world because the Ottoman Empire either traded or fought with them. Since the Ottoman Empire lies on Europe and Africa, Europe and Africa are probably emphasized in comparison to the rest of the world.
