How do we deal with intolerance both in our own culture and in the Muslim culture?
This question is important because intolerance is a bad but essentially inevitable thing. People often fear what is different, which naturally sprouts to intolerance. In a world that is becoming more and more globalized every day, we can no longer afford to feel intolerant to other countries or cultures. Even if we weren’t globalizing intolerance would be bad because it creates a general feeling of hate and mistrust throughout communities. Even subconscious prejudices against one culture or another often evolve into major violations of human rights. We need to find ways recognize and root out intolerance so things like hate crimes and prejudices can end.

I agree with your first sentence. I also believe that intolerance is inevitable and that people do fear what is different. Fear of change has always been a huge reason for intolerance towards other cultures and religions throughout history.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to read your paper, it sounds really interesting and I totally agree with your idea on intolerance being inevitable. Stereotypes, which aren't necessarily intolerance, however they definitely lead to intolerance, are things that people think every day, often without even realizing it. Like you said, we are subconsciously categorizing people before we even get to know them, based on race or appearance. It would also be interesting if you talked about ways we could prevent this from happening and stop people from acting out against innocent people, just because they are a different race.
