What factors influence a state?

I think a successful state is mainly the result of a good economy and agriculture. A state needs to produce enough food and other supplies for everyone who lives there and also enough to trade with surrounded communities. Whether or not the agriculture is good mostly depends on the land, and this is why larger states tend to develop where the land is rich and resources are easy to come by.
However, agriculture is only half of what I think makes a state successful. Government is also very important. Without the right leaders and a sort of hierarchy that works, everything will be chaotic and the state cannot develop. This is why agriculture and government are equally important factors in creating and developing a successful state.
